Position Description

POSITION TITLE: Assistant Health Educator (0.50 FTE, 10 months, non-exempt)
DEPARTMENTS: Office of Student Life
SUPERVISOR: Health Educator (full time)

I. Primary Purpose of Position

Under the supervision of the Health Educator for the Wellness Center, the Assistant Health Educator (AHE) is responsible for promoting student wellness initiatives (alcohol and other drug use, physical and sexual assaults, body image issues, mental health, nutrition, stress and general health information) for the University community. The AHE works collaboratively with the Health Educator on program development and implementation and is designated specific responsibilities in support of those programs.

II. Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the Health Educator (Wellness Center) on planning, implementing, and presenting health and wellness educational programming. This includes presentations, lectures, campaigns, awareness week events, workshops, training programs and special events to the University community, based on identified needs.
  • Remain current on strategies and programs for promoting health education on college campuses and participate in strategic planning and quality improvement activities including the development and evaluation of long- and short-term program goals.
  • Assist with the coordination and direction of the Peer Health Education (PHE) program, including student recruitment, PHE class, and development.
  • Serve as the primary advisor for 1 in 4 and Every 2 Minutes (sexual assault prevention and education programs).
  • Coordinate and conduct regular meetings with the PHEs to facilitate Health Education outreach, programming, and awareness campaigns on campus.
  • Serve as a facilitator for the BASICS program (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) and coordinate related paperwork.
  • Attend University-wide workshops, trainings and meetings relevant to health education service as identified by the Health Educator.
  • Help maintain Wellness Center website and other education materials and supplies.
  • Remain current on the national trends, theories, and strategies pertaining to health education.

III. Additional Responsibilities

  • Promote and encourage inter-departmental communication, cooperation, and collaboration.
  • Serve on departmental and University committees as assigned.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

IV. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, although a master's degree preferred in public health, psychology, social services, health sciences, or a closely related field of study.
  • Experience must include a minimum of one year health education experience (three years desired), preferably with a university, community or public health focus.
  • Some expertise in areas such as alcohol and other drug issues, disordered eating, nutrition, and sexual assault.
  • Demonstrated organizational and communicational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and exercise sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies, and work independently.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer software, including Windows XP, MS Office (i.e., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and electronic mail.
  • Will work late weeknight and weekend hours to accommodate students’ schedules.
  • Will work from September 1st through June 30th of each academic year.
